Simulation Scientist
Job Description
Location: London, Hybrid
At Gousto, our data teams are central to our ability to deliver an amazing customer experience. You will be part of our Unbox tribe, working in a cross-functional squad to build and improve simulation models used to support operational excellence in our fulfilment centres. Your work will help test proposed changes to operations, evolve existing data science products, and identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.
As this is a small team, you will need to be comfortable working in relative autonomy while collaborating with analysts, software engineers and product managers. You will help identify new opportunities for simulation, support discovery work to understand value and feasibility, and contribute to enhancing our experimental framework and simulation tooling.
We are still early in our simulation journey, but we have the ambition to build one of the most advanced simulation capabilities in the world — blending simulation, machine learning and optimisation to enable innovation at scale. We are therefore looking for someone highly motivated, technically strong and excited about shaping this area for the future.
Core responsibilities
- Iteratively improving our existing fulfilment centre simulation capability to meet new proposition requirements and improve key business metrics
- Owning part of our simulation product portfolio and supporting its roadmap
- Enhancing our experimental framework by contributing proactively to simulation tooling
- Working with senior simulation leaders to identify broader simulation opportunities within the fulfilment domain and supporting discovery to validate value and feasibility
- Identifying and implementing opportunities to reduce BAU overhead for existing products
- Collaborating with engineering and data teams to deploy simulation products that meet performance requirements while minimising cost
- Interacting with stakeholders to support decision-making using simulation outputs
- Contributing to the wider data community through knowledge sharing and best-practice promotion
- Supporting OKR planning by raising potential improvements and carrying out feasibility assessments
Who you are (we’re looking for candidates who can demonstrate most of the following):
- Strong knowledge of simulation technology applied to real-world problems
- Proficient in Python, with working knowledge of Java, SQL and PySpark
- Experience writing production-ready code and deploying products with limited engineering support
- Knowledge of operational processes (e.g., Supply Chain, Logistics, Fulfilment)
- Experience with AnyLogic is a strong plus
- Understanding of optimisation techniques and how they interact with simulation engines
- Comfortable working independently within a cross-functional environment
- Strong communication skills and ability to distil complex concepts to non-technical audience
- Thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth organisation
Nice to haves
- Preferred – MSc or PhD in applied mathematics, natural sciences, computer science or engineering, with evidence of strong coding skills.
- Alternative – BSc in one of the above disciplines, with significant experience building simulation models in a commercial environment.
